Moving large pieces of furniture by yourself can be an easy task if you follow the right procedures. It's important to know the best way to move heavy furniture in order to prevent injuries. Moving heavy items is a highly physical activity and injuries from lifting heavy furniture incorrectly can affect you for years to come, especially back injuries. Besides the health issue, moving heavy furniture incorrectly can lead to damage to other things such as your floors and even the furniture itself.

Therefore, if you want to prevent such, here are tips and tricks to make your heavy furniture removal exercise a success.

Use Furniture Sliders

Furniture sliders can be found at your local home improvement or hardware store. They are specialised for different types of applications. For instance, if you want to move your heavy piece of furniture over grass or carpet, you will find sliders that are designed for movement on such surfaces.

Lift your furniture at the corners and place the furniture sliders underneath each of the corners with the smooth edge towards your floor surface. This should help make the movement easier by reducing friction. With the sliders in position, you can then push your furniture easily. Push from your furniture's lower section because doing it from the top can increase the risks of tipping.

If you want to use readily available materials, consider aluminium foil or smooth cardboard if you intend to move the furniture on carpet. For a bare floor such as a tiled floor, consider dishrags.

Give Packing Blankets a Go

Apart from protecting your furniture, packing blankets can be used to glide or drag your furniture on grass. It might not be a good idea to drag the furniture across concrete surfaces because the amount of friction on these surfaces can damage the blankets and reduce their efficiency. To move your piece of furniture over steps (if you are moving the furniture into your house), drape some more blankets over these steps. For sufficient cushioning, add as many packing blankets as you can to create several layers that will make it much easier to move the furniture by acting as a ramp.

After moving the furniture over the steps, the blankets can still help glide it across carpet, hardwood floors, or tile.

Get a Dolly

Hand trucks or moving dollies are ideal for different types of furniture. For smaller pieces of furniture such as bookcases and dressers, you may want to use a hand truck. To move furniture on a hand truck, you simply need to lean it across the truck. For moving dollies, the piece of furniture will have to be lifted onto of the dolly.
