When you think of concrete, you probably think of unglamorous driveways and patios. But actually, people are starting to realise that concrete is a robust material, and it can be used flexibly. There are more ways to use concrete in the home than you realise. Here are four ways that you can put concrete to use in your home, and in a stylish way.

Concrete furniture. One of the greatest things about concrete is that it can be poured into any mould. Theoretically, this means that you can create absolutely any type of concrete furniture, exactly to your specifications, from scratch. You just need to hire somebody to create the mould for you. If you want to have a strong, industrial, Berlin-esque look in your dining room, you could fashion a whole dining table out of concrete, with sleek lines. And because concrete is cheaper than hardwood, you can save the money you would have spent on the material with beautiful design work.

Concrete benchtops. In the kitchen, you really need to choose materials that are going to stand up to the test of the time, and that can battle it out against heat and moisture. Concrete is the perfect choice for a benchtop because it's extremely durable. Again, a concrete benchtop can be cast into any mould. This means that if you have a kitchen with an unusual shape, you can pour concrete into a bespoke mould, and create a seamless countertop. Just be aware that you will need to seal the concrete to fully protect it against moisture.

Concrete flooring. Concrete flooring is often used for outdoor flooring, but not so much for interiors. This, however, is now changing. People think of concrete as an uninspired option in terms of design because they imagine it to be a grey slab. Actually, concrete can be stained with any colour, and it can also be coated with a sheen as well. If you wanted to create a Japanese inspired Zen space, for example, a black concrete floor with high gloss would be ideal.

Concrete sink. If you want to use concrete in a more subtle way, you can install concrete sinks in the kitchen or bathroom. Concrete sinks are often very deep with clean lines, and they look beautiful in interiors with sleek, contemporary design. And, of course, if you already have concrete countertops in your kitchen, this is a great way of extending the design and really embracing the material.
